Newark Bears Host Star-Studded Celebrity Softball Showdown

NEWARK– The Newark Bears hosted a star-studded celebrity softball showdown to kick off  the Atlantic League All-Star Game festivities on June 23 before a crowd of 6,491 fans at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium in Newark.

The game included entertainment, sports, radio and the community’s biggest stars for a competitive and fun match-up to benefit charity and empower the local Newark community.

Led by coaches Queen Latifah, Justin Tuck of the New York Giants and Angie Martinez of Hot 97 for the Hot 97 “Freedom Team”, and coaches Danielle Staub (Real Housewives of New Jersey), Baseball Hall of Famer Ozzie Smith and Bob Slade of KISS-FM for the KISS-FM “Liberty Team”, the three-inning softball game remained a competitive match-up to the end, with the Hot-97 “Freedom Team” edging out the KISS-FM “Liberty Team” for the win, with a final score of 5-2.

Benefitting the charities The Lancelot H. Owens Scholarship Foundation, KISS Cares, and Hip Hop Has Heart, the stars came out to Newark to support charity and the local community, including Newark natives Queen Latifah and NBA star Randy Foye, Adam Rodriguez (CSI: Miami), recording artist and actress Adrienne Bailon, AJ Calloway (Extra!), Danielle Staub (Real Housewives of New Jersey), actor and New Jersey native Frank Vincent (The Sopranos), Hot 97’s Angie Martinez, DJ Enuff, Funkmaster Flex, Mister Cee, Rosenberg, Cipha Sounds, actor Jamie Hector (Heroes, The Wire), Jill Nicolini (CW-11 New York), Julissa Bermudez, New York Giants and Super Bowl winner Justin Tuck, Ken Daneyko (New Jersey Devils), KISS-FM’s Bob Slade, Raqiyah, Talent, Bugsy, New York Jets D’Brickashaw Ferguson, Kerry Rhodes, and Thomas Jones, Nikko Smith (American Idol), Baseball Hall of Famer Ozzie Smith, Tara Costa (The Biggest Loser), award-winning gospel artist Tye Tribbett, and more.

Kicking off the Hot 97 vs. KISS-FM Celebrity Softball Showdown was Newark Mayor Cory Booker throwing out the ceremonial first pitch and actress Tichina Arnold, currently in the New York musical “The Wiz”, performing a breathtaking national anthem.
