Carteret Doctor Loses License

TRENTON – Last week, the state Board of Medical Examiners revoked the license of an orthopedic physician who practiced in Carteret for fondling a patient and other offenses.

A patient accused John R. Manzella, 72, of sexual misconduct for demanding sex instead of money for administering an injection to treat her chronic back pain in 2003.

Manzella must pay $64,131 in fines and court costs, the board ruled. The unanimous ruling was based on a hearing last year where an administrative law judge found the victim was a more credible witness than the doctor.

Manzella also “failed to maintain any medical records” for six patients he was treating with prescribed medications, canceled his malpractice insurance in 2006, let his license lapse for several months and failed to comply with a subpoena from state investigators, according to the complaint.
