Free Training Program for Low-Income Residents Offered

MIDDLESEX COUNTY—A new free program that will train individuals in allied health and transportation is being offered to low-income Middlesex County residents. The program, funded by a grant from the Middlesex County Department of Workforce Development, is open to those 18-21 years old. They will actually be paid for their participation: $4.50 for each classroom hour; $7.15 for each internship hour and $20 per day during occupational training.

“This is aimed at those who have graduated from high school or received a GED and who may not be considering college at this time,” said Tracey Montani, director of the College’s Career Training program. “There is an income eligibility requirement as well as a Middlesex County residency requirement. This is an excellent opportunity for young adults to begin a career ladder.”

The program is offered in two parts. The work readiness session runs May 19 to June 20, at which students learn computer skills, customer service, leadership, study skills and work readiness.

After completion of the work readiness session, training grants are available in the following: allied health (phlebotomist, electrocardiogram technician, and computerized medical office assistant) and software (Microsoft Office User Specialist). Students may also choose to train for a Commercial Driver’s License. For those not interested in training, internships are available.  The students will also have career workshops that will continue in January 2010.

“I hope people will take advantage of this program,” Montani said. “It will give them the necessary tools to begin a career.”
