Former Perth Amboy Mayor Dies

PERTH AMBOY – Former Perth Amboy Mayor and state Assemblyman George Otlowski died Monday at Raritan Bay Medical Center. He was 97.

The lifelong Democrat presided over Perth Amboy from 1976 to 1990. Otlowski won his first elected office in 1955, when he was voted to the Middlesex County Board of Chosen Freeholders. He served two terms.

In 1973, voters elected Otlowski to the first of eight terms in the state Assembly representing the 19th Legislative District.

“With the passing of George J. Otlowski, the city of Perth Amboy lost a true public servant,” the city’s current mayor, Wilda Diaz, said in a statement. “As a Middlesex County freeholder, state Assemblyman and mayor of our great city, he demonstrated leadership and an unflagging community spirit. … His spirit will live on.”
