CLARK—The Arthur L. Johnson High School DECA Team had eight of their students compete at the DECA State Conference in Cherry Hill.
DECA is an organization for business and marketing students where members compete against each other in over 15 different business fields such as restaurant management, hotel management, and accounting, to name a few. Competitions consist of a written-based exam in the student’s chosen event, and judged role-plays that test a student’s ability to respond quickly to different business situations.
Participants in the DECA State Conference had to qualify from the Regional Conference that took place in February this year. Among the eight participants, three students were able to take awards during this state competition. Junior Joseph Mignoli, was able to capture the highest test score for his competitive category of Retail Merchandising. Another big success came from one of the seniors, Michael Bonaccorso, who reached the finals in his event of Apparel and Accessories Merchandising.
Lastly, Senior Matt Calo led the Johnson group by placing second overall in his division, Restaurant and Food Service Management. Calo was a finalist last year in this event but came short of qualifying for the National Conference. His second place finish has guaranteed him a spot to compete at the DECA National Conference in Anaheim, California this April.
