Lady Owls Win Regional Title

basketball-equipment-03CRANFORD – On Sunday, March 1, the Union County College Lady Owls Basketball Team secured the Region XIX championship title, with a win over Delaware Tech by a score of 64-56 at the County College of Morris.

Delaware Tech started the game very aggressively, pulling ahead by 10 points at the beginning of the first half. However, by halftime, The Owls rallied to come out front by a score of 29-27. Delaware attempted to keep the second half of the game close, however, they could not contain The Lady Owl’s scoring streak. For the night, Lady Owl, Nicole Lilenfeld, finished with 22 points, 6 assists, and 4 steal; Kianna Williamson with 13 points, 3 rebounds, and 2 blocks; and Crystal Harris who had 9 points, 8 rebounds, and 3 blocks.

The Lady Owls now have 26 wins and no losses. Nicole Lilenfeld was named the Region XIX Tournament Most Valuable Player (MVP). UCC Coach Cheryl Bell was named the Region XIX ‘Donna Herran’ Coach of the Year. During the regular season the team achieved their best record ever, with an undefeated season of 24 wins and no losses. In addition to the Region XIX awards, the team was named the Garden State Athletic Conference (GSAC) Champions for the third straight year.

Coach Cheryl Bell was also named the GSAC Coach of the Year, and the assistant coaches, Tracey Napoleon and Janell Nelson, were named the GSAC Assistant Coaches of the Year. As of the Feb. 25, National Junior Colleges Athletic Association (NJCAA) Coaches Poll, UCC was ranked number 5 in the country, the highest ranking for The Lady Owls in the history of the college.

The Lady Owls will now play for the District Championship on Saturday, March 7, in Rhode Island against the Community College of Rhode Island. If the Lady Owls win the district championship, they will then advance to play for the national title.
