Rocky’s Bar & Other Rahway Memories

pastRAHWAY-Here are some memories from former Rahway resident Sydney Beech-Blicharz, Rahway High School Class of 1971:

“I lived in the first house directly behind Rocky’s Bar and Grill and Demblings Grocery Store on West Grant Avenue from 1955-1980. I have many memories of both places through the years. The original owner (of Rocky’s) was Rocky Romeo. His son, Anthony (Joseph) Romeo, who went by Joe, also ran the bar. It was sold to new owners three years ago.

“I came across this picture taken in the parking lot of Rocky’s. I recall this day, the men were singing ‘barbershop’ style, driving up in an antique truck and drove to all the bars in Rahway celebrating. All the men had beards. There was a beard growing contest for the 1958 Rahway Centennial event. My neighbor’s uncle, Joe Nolan, who was a Rahway mailman, was one of the winners at the Centennial festivities. There were several categories. I remember being six years old and hearing a lot of singing, laughing and bearded men hanging out of this old truck with a crank type start. It was a lot of excitement for me back in those days. My dad went outside and took the picture.”

Thank you Sydney for the memories!

If anyone has information or memories of the “barbershop” singers, men in the picture, other centennial events or bars in Rahway, please send it to me so I can include it in an upcoming column. Do you have similar memories from the other towns? I will have past information on Elizabeth Day, April 1989, given to me by William Frolich in an upcoming April column.

If you have your own memories or past material for Clark, Elizabeth, Linden or Rahway you can email me at dianenorekharrison@juno.com or send copies of your material to me c/o CMD Media 1139, East Jersey St., Suite 503, Elizabeth NJ, 07201.
