CRANFORD—Union County College’s women’s basketball team has completed their best season ever, with an undefeated record of 24 wins and no losses. The only scholarship team at the college, the Lady Owls ended their season with a win over Burlington County College on Saturday, Feb. 14, with a 90-84 score.
UCC held a 56-39 lead at halftime and even though the Barons attempted a comeback they could not contend with the UCC scoring. Crystal Harris, of Jersey City, had 28 points, 19 rebounds, 7 blocks, and 3 steals; Nicole Lilenfeld, of Piscataway, had 18 points, 6 assists, and 6 steals; Bobbi Van Fleet, of Plainfield, contributed with 15 points, 9 rebounds, 3 steals, and 2 blocks; and Martyna Ruminska, of Kearny, finished with 14 points, 4 rebounds, and 3 assists. This is the first time in the college’s history that the women’s basketball had an undefeated season.
In addition, this is the third consecutive season that the Lady Owls have also captured the Garden State Athletic Conference Championship. This is the first time in the college’s history that the women’s basketball team has achieved the championship title for three consecutive years.
The Lady Owls will now become the first UCC athletic team to attempt to win their third consecutive Region XIX title. The Region XIX playoffs begin on Monday, Feb. 23. UCC was ranked in sixth place in the national coaches’ poll as of Feb. 18.
