Girl Escapes Abduction Attempt

PERTH AMBOY – A 9-year-old girl escaped an attempted abduction Saturday morning at St. Mary’s School on Mechanic Street, authorities said.

The girl’s mother told police that she dropped off her daughter at the school gymnasium and watched the girl go into the building, police said.

The girl walked down the hallway to her CCD class when she was stopped by a man who told her the classes were cancelled, police said. The man then grabbed the girl and took her across the street to the church, police said.

The girl told police that she screamed and fought against the man as he took to a door that led to the church basement, authorities said. She got away and he fled, police said.

Police are looking for a light-skinned Hispanic man in his 30s, between 5-foot-8 and 5-foot-10 with an average build. He was wearing black pants and black boots with a green bubble jacket with the letters J and K on the side, police said.

Anyone with information on the incident is encouraged to contact the Perth Amboy Police Department at 732-442-4400.
