EDISON – On Friday, Jan. 9, the cameras from News 12 New Jersey were focused on Christopher Georgevich of Elizabeth, a senior at the Wardlaw-Hartridge School in Edison. Georgevich was being interviewed by reporter George Falkowski after being named the New Jersey Education Association (NJEA)/News 12 Scholar Athlete.
Georgevich, who is the captain of the boys’ varsity basketball team and a member of the school’s tennis team, fielded questions from Falkowski about his athletic skills, extracurricular activities, plans to pursue a career in medicine, and more. The segment was scheduled to air on News 12 for three consecutive Wednesdays.
The NJEA/News 12 Scholar Athlete Recognition Program honors New Jersey high school seniors who are successful not only in the classroom, but on the court or on the field. Georgevich was chosen based on a nomination written by Patricia Malizia, the school’s director of athletics.
Georgevich said, “The distinction of being named the NJEA/News 12 Scholar Athlete has caused me to feel both appreciated and recognized for all my hard work and is just the encouragement I need to continue on my current course of study.”
In June, he will attend a luncheon to be held in his honor, where he may be designated 2008-2009 Scholar Athlete of the Year and receive a $1,000 scholarship.
Vice president of his senior class, Georgevich is one of the school’s top students. Academically, he has taken six AP courses throughout his Upper School career, including AP Macroeconomics and AP Biology. He was named an AP Scholar earlier this year, and has been inducted into the Cum Laude Honor Society. He was recently named an Edward J. Bloustein Distinguished Scholar based on his SAT scores and class rank.
Georgevich is a peer leader and student ambassador and plays the trumpet in the concert band. He was nominated for Wendy’s High School Heisman Award based on his scholastics and athletic abilities. His real love, however, is volunteering for his local First Aid Squad as an EMT.
Christopher is the son of Michael and Grace Georgevich of Elizabeth.
