ELIZABETH – Police found the body of a 26-year-old Roselle man inside a car near the corner of Reid and East Grand streets on Jan. 8.
He is the second homicide victim in Elizabeth this year, according to the Union County Prosecutor’s Office.
A resident called 911 to report the body shortly before 2 a.m., the prosecutor’s office said. Cleavon Haynes was shot twice in the head, but the prosecutor’s office was waiting until the autopsy was completed to release an official cause of death.
The Union County Homicide Task Force and Elizabeth police are investigating the killing. Anyone with information should call Sgt. Dean Marcantonio of the Homicide Task Force at (908) 527-4699.
Union County Crimestoppers is also offering a reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to the arrest and indictment of the person or people responsible for Haynes’ death. Crimestoppers may be reached at (908) 654-TIPS.
A 19-year-old homeless man has been charged with felony homicide for allegedly setting a fire that led to the death of a city firefighter on Jan. 2. Last year, there were 13 homicides in Elizabeth.
