CARTERET – An 18-year-old Carteret man driving a stolen SUV was killed when the vehicle collided head-on with a tractor trailer early Saturday morning, authorities said.

Dwain Allen was driving south in the northbound lane of Industrial Avenue early Saturday morning, when his 2003 Lincoln Navigator collided with a 2005 Kenworth tractor trailer, officials said.

Allen was pronounced dead at the scene, but the driver of the truck – Keith Hoover, 48, of Pennsylvania Furnace, Pa., was not injured.

The SUV had been reported stolen about a week before the fatal crash, authorities said. It was spotted in New Brunswick by Rutgers University police early Saturday morning, according to officials. The officers tried to pull the Navigator over, but Allen sped off, authorities said.

Rutgers police followed the vehicle onto Route 18 and the New Jersey Turnpike, ending their pursuit before Exit 10, officials said. A Carteret police officer spotted the car leaving the Turnpike at Exit 12. The officer attempted to pull the vehicle over, but Allen fled again, officials said.

A preliminary investigation indicates Carteret police did not pursue the car, authorities said.
