Franklin School Students Give2TheTroops—Students at Franklin School in Rahway held a school-wide community service project where students brought in items for individuals serving in the armed forces. The school donated items through an organization called Give2TheTroops, a nationwide charitable organization serving deployed and wounded troops. Give2TheTroops’s goal is to support the physical, moral and spiritual health through providing letters and care packages. Through Franklin School’s strong participation, over 600 items were collected and donated. The school’s Blue and Gold Club, facilitated by Valerie Oliver and Raffaella Nicoll, played a strong part in the collection and organization of the items before they were delivered to Give2TheTroops. Because of Franklin School’s strong commitment to supporting troops, the school was visited by Captain Ryan VanVeelan, a helicopter pilot for the United States Air Force. VanVeelan spoke to students about his experiences in Iraq and his responsibilities as a helicopter pilot. Pictured here, fifth grade students Evans and Seiry, from Venisha Jordan’s fifth grade class, show off some of VanVeelan’s equipment.
