Linden Hosts Boxing Night

LINDEN—A “Night of Sparkling Diamonds, Bubbling Champagne and Championship Boxing” will be held on Friday, Nov. 14, when the Linden Boxing Association, in conjunction with the Linden Public Property and Community Services Department presents the 75th annual New Jersey State Finals of the Diamond Gloves Boxing Tournament.

The full night of championship boxing entertainment is being sponsored by the Conoco Phillips Bayway Refinery and will be held at the Linden High School Gymnasium, located at 121 West St. Georges Avenue. The first fight is scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at the door for $10 each. Doors open at 7:30 p.m.

According to Linden Boxing Association President Alfred A. Volpe, “This is the ninth consecutive year that we are hosting the Diamond Glove Tournament State Finals here in Linden and also the ninth consecutive year that our friends from the Conoco Phillips Bayway Refinery are sponsoring the event. Without their sponsorship, we wouldn’t be able to have this successful night of amateur boxing that annually supports, through its proceeds, a varied amount of programs for our city’s youth.”

This year, the Linden Boxing Association will be honoring its founder, Tony Orlando for his exceptional commitment to the sport of boxing and the youth of Linden. He has been a dedicated trustee of the association since its inception and continues to provide leadership and guidance to the organization as it is run today. The Linden Boxing Association has donated in excess of $303,785 to Linden Recreation supported youth programs and has sponsored three scholarships annually to graduating Linden High School students.

Expecting to be in attendance at this year’s championship bouts are, Bobby Czyz, former world light heavyweight and cruiserweight champion; Emile Griffith, former world welterweight, junior middleweight and middleweight champion; Dwight Muhammad Qawi, former world light heavyweight and WBA and IFB cruiserweight champion; and Lou Duva, the Hall of Fame boxing trainer and manager who has handled some of the greatest fighters in the world including 19 world champions.

Tickets can also be purchased at the Community Center Building, 605 South Wood Avenue, Linden, up until Nov. 13. Don’t forget your autograph books. For further information on the Diamond Glove Finals, call the Linden Department of Public Property and Community Services at 908-474-8600.
