JERSEY CITY—Nicole Sarica, a 2008 graduate of Linden High School and member of the New Jersey City University women’s soccer team, has been named the New Jersey Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week for week three of the 2008 season. It is the first weekly conference award she has received in her career.
Sarica continued her solid scoring contributions at forward for the Knights, tallying three goals and an assist for seven points as NJCU went 2-0-0 last week to improve to 5-0-0 overall for the first time in its history. She has six goals in her first five career games, including two game-winners.
In a 5-1 win at SUNY Purchase on Sept. 11, Sarica netted two more goals for the Knights. She made it a 3-0 lead at halftime with her goal at 35:28, receiving a thru ball onto the top of the box, before finishing a breakaway. Sarica concluded the scoring at 85:46 with another breakaway begun with a thru ball outside the box.
In NJCU’s 6-1 win over Medgar Evers College on Sept. 13, Sarica scored her second game-winning goal of her young career and added her fourth assist. Her go-ahead goal came at 59:24 when she angled a sharp shot from the left wing past the keeper and inside the right post, for a 2-1 lead. She also assisted another goal.
As of Sept. 10, Sarica was tied for 11th nationally in assists per game and was tied for 36th in Division III points per game.
Sarica lists among the NJAC statistical leaders in every major offensive category. As of Sept. 15, she ranks tied for third in game-winning goals (2, 0.40 per game), fourth in shots (27) and shots per game (5.40), tied for fourth in assists (4), fifth in assists per game (0.80), tied for fifth in points (16), sixth in goals (6), and seventh in points per game (3.20) and goals per game (1.20).
