ELIZABETH – A Linden man was arrested last week in connection with a hit-and-run killing that has now been ruled a homicide.
Police had initially believed that Ruben Marin, 31, had been struck by accident by a white sport utility vehicle as he crossed Lowden Street at the corner of Westfield Avenue in the early morning hours of July 27. The vehicle fled the scene.
Now police say Marin was killed by a man who had argued with him in a local bar. During the investigation, detectives learned that Marin and Christian Chacon, 27, of Linden had gotten into an argument at a Morris Avenue bar.
According to police, Chacon found deep scratches on the side of his SUV when he left the bar. Chacon believed that Marin had vandalized his vehicle, so when Chacon spotted Marin walking along Westfield Avenue he intentionally drove into him, according to police.
Chacon was arrested in the early hours of July 29 at a car wash in Elizabeth. He was apparently trying to destroy evidence of the hit-and-run, police said.
Chacon has been charged with murder and leaving the scene of a fatal accident.
