RAHWAY – For the past twelve years, the Annual Lehrer-Gibilisco Benefit Softball Tournament for Children’s Specialized Hospital has raised money to support the “Lightning Wheels” Athletic Team. This year, event organizers are pulling out all the stops to make the 13th anniversary the best ever. Playing according to the American Association of Softball and Men’s Slo-Pitch rules, teams will compete on Saturday, Aug. 16, starting at 9 a.m. at Rahway River Park, St. Georges Avenue in Rahway, at softball fields three and four.
Joseph Gibilisco, owner/manager of The Lehrer-Gibilisco Funeral Home in Rahway, began the event 13 years ago with event organizer Darren Lasinski. “We are trying to hit a home run for the kids these years.” said Gibilisco. “This is an event that showcases our commitment to helping children achieve their best at all time.” James M. Zwiebel co-event organizer stated that “he is very proud of each of the athletes on the “Lightning Wheels” team and that it’s important to these young people and their athletic endeavors so they achieve their personal best”.
Children’s Specialized Hospital, located in Mountainside, Fanwood and Toms River, is the largest pediatric rehabilitation hospital in the United States. The affiliate in Mountainside offers a wide range of medical, developmental, educational and rehabilitative services for infants, children, adolescents and young adults.
“Lightning Wheels” is a wheelchair athletic team for children ages 5-21 that compete at local, regional and national events. Monies raised from the 13th annual Lehrer-Gibilisco Benefit Softball Tournament will go directly to support the activities of the team. Corporate sponsorship is essential to the success of the event. The Lehrer-Gibilisco Funeral Home donates all trophies, prizes, shirts and the picnic, so all other proceeds from the corporate sponsors goes directly to the “Lightning Wheels” kids.
Darren Lasinski, event organizer explained that the tournament has grown tremendously during the years. “It has been a great opportunity to help the kids, they have such a great attitude about everything.” He said
To ensure the success of this 13th year, corporate sponsors are invited to contact Joe Gibilisco at (732) 388-1874 or Darren Lasinski at (732) 388-9044. Donations from community members are also welcome.
