With the host of problems facing our people and our planet, many have announced the decline of America but I find fault with those doom-sayers.
Americans are people among whom the world has found its best.
Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, George Washington Carver, Thomas Edison, Robert Oppenheimer and many others have enlightened humanity and built a stronger United States, which opened its arms to welcome such new citizens as Albert Einstein.
Heroes walk among us; some tested and discovered, with some whose time for greatness lies in the future. We are a nation of heroes and heroism is in our culture.
We are generous, even to those who once fought against us. We are kind, compassionate and good. Still, we are strong and determined, able to exert vast power but often able to restrain ourselves from unleashing destruction upon our brothers and sisters in this human family.
Real patriots among us are unafraid to admit mistakes and work to correct the impact of our errors. In the case of Iraq as well as in the environmental devastation that has accompanied years of industrial growth, we can make better that which we have hurt. We are Americans. We can do anything.
We can reclaim our economic prosperity, despite the behavior of some who have betrayed us and shipped American jobs overseas. We can once again balance the riches of our society so that while it is possible to achieve unparalleled wealth in this great nation, those who have nothing are able to survive with dignity and hope.
Some will try to scare us with ignorant tales and ‘Swift Boat’ style tactics. Others will lie outright and attempt to steal another election from the American people. They will not succeed.
This is the year when America will again choose a new generation of leadership, empowered by a new American majority that has set aside partisan divisions and which will lead us into a new dawn of freedom, peace and prosperity. The time has come for a new American Century and we are ready, which is why we will elect Sen. Barack Obama as President of the United States of America on Nov. 4!This column was originally posted on July 11, 2008 3:36:04 PM ET at http://my.barackobama.com/page/community/post/jimdevine/gGxDnj
