PERTH AMBOY—Some businesses that were in Perth Amboy in 1943 included Cher Radio, Dolly Dress Shop, Fine’s Dress Shop, Label Youth Center, Lady Fair Salon, Linoleum and Carpet Factory outlet, Miller’s Beauty Shop, and Olstowski Studio over Grant’s 5 & 10. These were all located on Smith Street. There was also the Photo Shop on State Street.
South Amboy resident Rose Ann Pawlik gave me a copy of the Great Beds Lighthouse post card from her late father, Leo Wieczorek’s, collection.
The back of the post card reads: “Great Beds Lighthouse, Raritan Bay. The year 1918 began with two enterprising gentlemen playing a golf game on the frozen waters of the Raritan Bay. By Jan. 6, the intense cold had made the ice so thick that thousands were out on the Bay, and at least four automobiles drove around the Lighthouse and back to Amboy.” Thank you Rose Ann!
Here are two past Perth Amboy tidbits: From about 1800 to 1870, the public school classes were held in the court house. The first public school, School # 1 on State Street, opened in 1870. There was a Ladies’ Society of the Presbyterian Church in 1857.
