ELIZABETH – Elizabeth High School graduate Roberto Ramos signed a contract to play baseball in the Boston Red Sox organization last weekend. The shortstop will be assigned to the Gulf Coast (Fla.) Red Sox in the rookie level Gulf Coast League.
In his senior season for Elizabeth, Ramos batted .450 with nine doubles, 24 RBI, 21 runs and 14 stolen bases. The Newark Star-Ledger selected Ramos as its high school baseball player of the week for the week of May 13.
“Having Roberto at the top of the lineup is enormous. He does so much for us offensively,” said Elizabeth coach Ray Korn earlier this year. “He leans on his instincts and is not intimidated by any situation. We moved him from short to center and he’s been a great asset. He can close the gap very quickly, plus he has a strong arm. He plays the way I imagine Jose Reyes played when he was Roberto’s age.”
