Remembering the Past: Linden Memories

by Diane Norek Harrison

LINDEN—Here are some memories from reader Mildred Laux: “Dear Diane, I enjoy reading your ‘Memories of the Past’ very much. Enclosed is a part of my memories.

“My grandparents came to the Untied States from Germany in 1890. Their farm house was on the corner of Carteret Street and Morris Avenue in Linden. My grandfather was a shoemaker and carpenter. He had a work shop in the corner of the barn.

“My mother was born in 1895 and her sister in 1898. When they were in their teens they worked for Merck Co. in Rahway. They either walked to work or rode their bicycles.

“My mother and I lived in Rahway and visited my grandparents quite often. It was always a special day for me because their way of life was so different from mine. They had a pump in the kitchen for water and of course there was the outhouse. It was fun chasing the chickens, ducks and geese.

“They had a vegetable garden so there was always plenty of food. My grandmother made a lot of jelly and my grandfather made wine. We always had plenty of homegrown vegetables to take home.

“I have so many nice memories of my visits to Linden and my grandparents.”

My thanks to Mildred for keeping my column going with how things used to be in the Linden!

RAHWAY—This year Rahway is celebrating their 150th Anniversary. I am hoping to hear from readers who have their own memories or those who have some past material of the town to be able to print in my column throughout the year. Let me know what you remember growing up in Rahway from the last 150 years!

Send me your memories or past information from school, butchers, bakers, candlestick makers, stores that gave out S & H Green Stamps or other incentives, history or information from past or present organizations or clubs, past bar names or stores with locations, plays, houses of worship, past happenings of the town, parades, sports, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, winter or summer, etc. My column is for readers to write in and remember back! This is an invitation to all readers to jump in and send past information from the four towns listed below.

If you have your own memories or past material for Clark, Elizabeth, Linden or Rahway you can email me at or send “copies” of your material to me at CMD Media P.O. Box 1061 Rahway, New New Jersey 07065
