Linden Announces 2008 Concert Series

LINDEN—The Linden Recreation Department has announced the line-up for their 2008 free concerts and movies in the park series to be held at The Raymond Wood Bauer Promenade Amphitheater located at 400 N. Wood Avenue, next to the post office and across from City Hall.

This year’s series includes: 19 concerts, four “Kiddie Koncerts” and 14 movies shown on the Amphitheater’s 17 foot by 10 foot screen.

The promenade, in its third full season, opens on June 3 with The Mahoney Brothers leading off at 7:30 p.m. with a concert entitled “Elvis and Friends”.

Some of the seasons highlights include: a “Happy Birthday America Weekend” with a 4th of July concert starring the “Sensational Soul Cruisers”, a Saturday, July 5, showing of “Yankee Doodle Dandy”, a Monday, July 7, old fashioned rock and roll concert with the “Kootz”, and a country western night on Tuesday, July 8, featuring “Mustang Sally” – an incredible eight piece, all female band direct from Nashville, Tennessee. Also on the bill for a return engagement are the King of Polka, “Jimmy Stirr and His Orchestra” (July 22), “Jobonanno and the Godsons of Soul” (June 24), the big band sound of “Brass Tacks” (Sept. 16) and “Verdict” (Sept. 9) who wowed last year’s audience with a mix of popular Reggae and Soca with a twist of Latin and Calypso music.

The three-week Doo Wop Extravaganza features “Kenny Vance and the Planotones”(Aug. 12), “Cleveland Still & the Dubs / Lenny Cocco & The Chimes” (Aug. 19) and Shirley Alston Reeves, the original lead singer of the Shirelles (Aug. 26). The Doo Wop Extravaganza will also feature three movie nights – “Bye Bye Birdie” (Aug. 14), “Beach Blanket Bingo” (Aug. 21) and “Where the Boys Are” (Aug. 28.)

This year, three tribute shows have also been added to the schedule, “Rag Doll” paying homage to Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons (June 17), the “52nd Street Band” featuring the music and sound of Billy Joel (Sept. 6) and “Ric as Rod” playing all the songs of the great Rod Stewart (July 15).

A children’s movie night is slotted for June 26 (“The Muppets Take Manhattan”) while everyone is invited to enjoy sci-fi night with the movie “War of the Worlds” on July 31 and fright night featuring the movie “Them” on Sept. 11. International movies are planned for a weekend in late September, one in Polish and one in Spanish.
