ELIZABETH- Here are some terrific memories from reader William Frolich: “Dear Ms. Harrison, After reading your column in the paper, and seeing the note at the end, I was inspired to write this letter and add a few memories of my own for your use.
“Does anyone remember the little Staten Island ferryboat that used to travel from its berth next to the Recreation Pier over to Port Ivory just across the Arthur Kill? The boat could handle a couple of cars, but one day a large eighteen wheel tank truck drove down the ramp to the boat and got half way aboard one end of the ferry when it weight caused both the tractor and the ferry to sink in the water.
“Another memory is that of sitting on a bench on the upper deck of the pier on a hot summer day and watching the traffic on the river. Excursion boats used to leave from that pier, also, as the sailed up the Hudson River, or over to Rockaway Beach. Sometimes the boats sailed around New York Harbor on a moonlight cruise.
“Does anyone remember the trolley cars that used to travel in the middle of the streets on rails that were embedded in the pavement? For a single nickel a traveler could ride all the way to the next fare limit, and another nickel would let him ride through the next. When you boarded the car you dropped your nickel in the fare box, and watched the coin as it trickled down a funny little chute and was registered by the motorman.”
My thanks to Mr. Frolich for sending his memories to be able to continue my column. I have more great winter memories from Mr. Frolich which I will use at the end of the year. It is never too early to send me your Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas or winter memories!
What Mr. Frolich was referring to in the beginning of his letter was when I wrote I need the help of the reader to keep this column going. I am sure there are plenty of memories out there from Clark, Linden and Rahway! Let me hear some to be able to continue my column. Graduation time is coming up! Have your own memories or past material from graduation, class nights, class trips, school plays, etc. from grammar school or high school? Have summer fun memories of the area? Please share!
If you have your own memories or past material for Clark, Elizabeth, Linden or Rahway you can email me at firstname.lastname@example.org or send “copies” of your material to me at CMD Media P.O. Box 1061 Rahway, NJ 07065.
