The pig with a wooden leg

Voice of the People by James J. DevineOnce I was driving along a country road and saw a farmer with pig that had a wooden leg. I went to the farmer and asked him about the pig.

“That there is an remarkable pig, an incredible pig, the most terific pig you ever did see,” he told me. He’s just a wonderful pig! One time back on the north forty acres, this here pig sniffs on the ground, starts scratching and digging. When I checked it out, I struck oil. He made me a very rich man. That is an remarkable pig.”

I asked again how he got the wooden leg and the farmer shouted, “You gotta listen, boy!”

“That there is an remarkable pig, a wonderful pig, the most incredible pig you ever did see,” he told me. “Another time, my wife and I were asleep in the house when a fire broke out. This pig busted out of his sty, made his way into the house, woke us up and got us out, then returned and pulled my children by the scruff of their necks before the house burned down. He saved me and my entire family!”

I asked if he was injured in the fire and the farmer shouted, “You gotta listen, boy!”

The farmer said, “That there is an incredible pig, a tremendous pig, the most fantastic pig you ever did see! There’s never been pig like him and won’t be ever again. Once, when I was plowing a field, the tractor tipped over and pinned my leg to the ground. This went to the house, brought back my wife and saved my life!”

When he finished the story, I said, “You didn’t tell me how he got the wooden leg.”

“Oh,” said the farmer, “Ya know, if you have a pig like that, you don’t eat a pig like that all at once.”
